Do Nigerians Make Money From Blogging?

If you are familiar with the blogosphere, you will realise that this is a very simple question to answer with the likes of LindaIkeji whose blog most of us are addicts of, Bellanaija, Ogbongeblog, Naijaloaded and very poppular forums like Naijahotjobs, and nairaland to mention a few.

Yes a few of our top bloggers are making some very good cash blogging but a lot more a just barely surviving and trailing in the chase for success in this market space. To be candid with you, those making money from this space are making very good income from them, at least Linda Ikeji does not spare any of us in making us realize how well she's been doing.

What makes for the success of these bloggers you may want to ask. I have decided to do some analysis of the success factors and I hope in the process I would have done a good job in pointing us in the right direction:

1. What is their niche? Well I am sure you don't need a soothsayer to help you decipher this......these guys are playing in a market that is taking the whole country by the storm....they are mostly into the entertainment industry. Nigerians love fun and they love to know what is happening to celebrities they follow. Everyday, there seems to be some funny news item about celebrities all over the whole place. Whether these news are real or staged managed by the actors who wants to remain relevant is another story. These top bloggers go after these news items and it makes the young teaming Nigerian pursue them with a lot of vigor.
2. Understand your audience: These top bloggers know what it takes to make top Nigerian, technologically savy youths keep coming to their blogs.....they enjoy the gist, the fun, the thrills! so all they do is make consistent efforts to get the stories coming. In every business, when you understand the demography and  your potential clients, you are in for great success.

3. Monetize your traffic: Each time I visit LindaIkeji's blog, I can't but keep wondering how much she makes from her blog. The lady is pretty smart! Apart from the story she sells, what she's practically selling are other companies who are willing to pay to get across to her audience. Practically all the space on her blog is filled with banners and advertorials from potential sellers. She has done a very good work at monetizing her audience and invariable the traffic she gets on her blog. I don't know if you know that she was one of the first person's to make millions of naira from affiliate marketing via a blog traffic.
4. Be consistent: Sure you know Linda didn't get to where she is in a single day. Blogging takes a lot of hard work if you want to make a real success of it and consistency is the watchword. Seeking articles to write, getting the right stories, keeping your audience interested is all work. You can't afford a slip because others are working really hard to get your audience.
5. Give your audience incentives: One good thing Linda Ikeji does very well is to appreciate her audience. She organizes promos and gives real gifts to her audience. As a blogger, you must appreciate the people that make your blog relevant by giving quality content and also organize promos from time to time. You can never under estimate the power of FREE (FOC).

Finally, I am just saying blogging is a potential source of income for those that want to work from home if you get it right. I hope I can share some resources in this space in days to come. Wishing a great and successful new year ahead.
